Environmental Literacy via Ancient Myths

Saturday 26 April 2025

Undergraduate students Emily Dale, Cole Lum and Eleanor Shorten were part of the 2025 Modern Classics cohort, and designed the following Applied Classics podcast project to enhance environmental literacy amongst young people via storytelling and art based on ancient myths. They describe their project below:

We aim to draw parallels between ancient Greco-Roman myths and modern day environmental issues through the media of storytelling and visual accompaniments, offering practical workshops to children to learn early on about different threats to our planet and different human-environment relations. Among other goals, we hope to contribute to the following:

  • UN Sustainable Development Goals 13: Take Urgent Action to Combat Climate Change
  • UN Sustainable Development Goal 15: Protect and Restore the Environment
  • Educating young people in an interdisciplinary way, with the use of art, ancient literature, and socio-economic problems.
